First Aid Courses

First Aid responder:

max 8 persons per course

First Aid Response or FAR is PHECC’s newest education and training standard. It’s a foundation first aid course that trains course participants to provide first aid for a person who becomes suddenly unwell or injured until the arrival of emergency medical services. FAR includes the full Cardiac First Response Community standard also.

The course should take no less than 18 teaching contact hours. Refresher training is required every two years. It will be delivered by a certified FAR instructor who will lead and guide you through the course. You can expect the course to be delivered by a combination of presentations, demonstrations and lots of practical sessions. The Cardiac First Responder part of the course takes about 4-5 hours and is DVD led. The assessment will be skills based and a short multiple-choice question exam designed to reinforce the knowledge and skills learned on the course.

Following the FAR course participants should be able to:

  • Deal with life-threatening or potentially life-threatening conditions until the arrival of emergency medical services
  • Provide an adequate response for conditions not thought to be life-threatening but are necessary to prevent further harm before the emergency medical services arrive
  • Provide first-aid in a wide range of environments including the workplace, home and recreational settings
  • Display the requisite personal skills including composure, competence and self-confident while understanding their limitations

Course Duration 3 days.
Can be completed on consecutive days or over several weeks. Refresher Course is completed over two days.

Course Assessments
During the course the learner will undertake an assessment of knowledge and skills. This will take the form of:

  • 20 question MCQ
  • Practical skills will be assessed during the course in accordance with PHECC FAR skills assessment sheets

First Aid responder renewal course:

The First Aid Response Renewal course aims to deliver the PHECC standard of First Aid Responder to those who are currently certified at PHECC FAR level (or QQI OFA) and aims to revise a skill set that includes Cardiac First Response (CFR) along with the skills to assess and manage a range of emergency medical and trauma situations as part of the pre-hospital emergency care team.


CARDIAC FIRST RESPONDER (CPR & AED):

Cardiac First Responder (CFR) this half day certified course. Recognised by the Pre-hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) it teaches all the basic life support skills for victims of stroke; cardiac arrest; heart attack; choking as well as the relevant legal issues and the administration of aspirin.


Emergency First Aid Course:

This course will enable participants to act as a back-up to First Aid Responders and/or respond to an emergency prior to the arrival of the more qualified personnel.
The role of the person with this qualification is to help calm the patient and gather information & equipment such as a defibrillator. It will give a basic knowledge of most first aid scenarios. Learning CPR & AED are also part of this course.

Sports First Aid CoursE:

The Sports First Aid course is designed to teach sports coaches, PE teachers, personal trainers, and other professionals who work in this industry, how to provide quality sports first aid. It covers essential information on major injuries, life-saving procedures and first aid assessments.

Through case studies and practical exercises, you will learn about the role and responsibilities of the sports first aider, exploring the contents of the first aid kit in detail. Our experienced instructor will take you through procedures and best practice for dealing with a range of minor, major and environmental injuries, from sprains to concussions and frostbite.

By the end of this course, you will have excellent practical and theoretical knowledge, with the ability to take control in the case of any first aid emergency. You’ll also have the confidence and skills to perform CPR and use an AED, and to protect and reassure a casualty while emergency services arrive.


Paediatric First Aid

This course is designed for parents, caregivers, school teachers, crèche, and Montessori staff. It will provide participants with a full understanding of paediatric first aid for children.

This course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge needed to tend to a child or infant with medical emergencies.


Course Content:

  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation(CPR & AED)
  • Chocking (foreign body airway obstruction)
  • Fractures, burns, bleeding, poisoning
  • Head injuries
  • Medical emergencies

This course is classroom based, and it is highly interactive with role-playing and practical exercises to reinforce the participants understanding and learning.

All participants will receive a certificate on completion in Paediatric First Aid
